Are you thinking garden?

My mind keeps drifting to the garden,wondering how I can improve on last year. This wasn't how I dreamt it would end.

Right in the middle of harvest we had Hurricane Irene which left us with minor flooding in our yard and a twisted mix of weeds and produce sitting in about 6 inches of mud.

So I grabbed my little 3 prong hand tool and proceeded to rototille my garden. I know your probably thinking "Why didn't she have someone till it for her?",but, I'm crazy like that. It took 2 days of intense flipping and digging of my soil,and when it was done I certainly felt like I had won the battle.

Just check out what I found in the garden. Lots and lots of big fat juicy worms. They all said they would bring on a great harvest in the next garden and that I shouldn't throw in the towel quite yet.

The garden is only 12x15 feet. Ever year I try to extend the amount of growing space. This year will be no different. My son in law has made a few boxes which will give me more room to plant without the chore of turning over new soil. Just fill and plant. Sounds too easy doesn't it?

Anyway once that was done I went out and purchased some Cow A Dunga to feed said garden.Of course it's the end of January, the seed catalogues are arriving almost daily and I'm itching to get started. I definitely need more tomatoes...........maybe some turtle beans and green beans of course.......and cukes lots of cukes. What about potatoes? Should I try them.Hmmm........maybe we should call the rototiller guy......................said the hobbit

A new challenge for 2012

Although I'm fairly confident with what I knit, I think I might be in a bit of a rut and need to venture out of the comfort zone,as they say. That's probable one of the best things about being in a knitting group. Ours is pretty laid back and there is no pressure to learn anything new. We just enjoy each others company and meeting every week gives us the push to finish projects that might sit in a knitting basket for months and become one of many NQF that crafters tend to gather. (NQF=NOT QUITE FINISHED)

Before the crazy holiday rush set in Cindi S. found this pattern at Jo Ann Fabric shop. Actually she found a photo by the yarn. Instructions were said to be on line,just a click away. Well as with many sites, this wasn't quite true. Instruction for the socks, minus the chart for the pattern, was the only thing available. Chart for the actual design would be forthcoming. Really? Of course, that didn't prevent our Cindi from moving forward with her project.

She just grabbed her paper and pencil and worked out the design herself. Using the photo as a guide, and the stitches required from the sock pattern, she was able to come pretty close.

I think they came out great! Somebody would be very lucky to get these,don't you think?But hold on she had to tweek just a bit more.

After finding these soles online what else could she do but turn them into a great pair of slippers. What do you think? Of course if you want to take the easy way out. The birthday cake

Between Christmas and New Years is dear Jiggy's birthday. Every year I try to do something special but, there have been times that it just didn't get done. This year was going to be different. He loves yellow cake with chocolate frosting and this was the year he was finally going to get one.

I have been trying to concentrate on more local so KING ARTHUR FLOUR located in Norwich Vt. was the natural choice to search for that special recipe. It wasn't long before I found this

CLASSIC YELLOW CAKE WITH FUDGE FROSTING It was perfect!! A one layer cake that would not be overwhelming for a person just getting ready to start that NewYears diet and yet rich enough to let him know that I didn't forget and yes his birthday is worth celebrating even if it does fall smack in the middle of the busiest holiday season.

I creamed my sugar and butter then added the eggs 1 at a time, then beat for 2 minutes till light and fluffy. The recipe called for plain yogurt (not low fat) well, would you believe that right after Christmas, due to slow deliveries , such a yogurt could not be found in all the 2 hours that I scoured our little towns grocery store. I settle for regular sour cream. After alternating my flour mix with the sour cream I lined a cake pan with parchment paper.Instructions implied removing the cake from the pan could be a problem.

I carefully spread the batter and popped it in the oven. Time was getting short,Jiggy would be home from work in just a few hours and I wanted to be finished before he arrived. He makes his own work hours so the possibility that he would walk through the door at any moment was in the back of my mind. Paranoia was setting in...........don't you think?

Baking done ..........seemed a bit high in the pan. Maybe it would come out in pieces!!!What would I do then? Hand him a plate full of crumbs while I sang Happy Birthday !!!!

Not to worry..........it came out clean and ready to frost.

Recipe for the fudge frosting makes enough to frost 3 cakes. Really......I'm not lying. They suggested letting it run over the cake and that the excess could be wiped with your finger should you so wish. As you can see, I did a lot of wishing...

Final results..............check out that smile. That's a happy camper. The single candle was a reminder that today we celebrate the first day of the rest of his life.....................said the hobbit

What we did at our knitting group

December was brimming with project meant for all the special people we know. Of course I wasn't going to post pictures of anyone's work until after they were gifted. People have spies you know.

There were mittens and socks scarves and a most delicate scarf being done for a 4 year old great granddaughter. No pattern here.......just a very dainty stitch that she called french ribbon. The knitter is from France and what struck us as amusing is that in France it is referred to as English ribbon............only it is said in french. What's up with that........very confusing for the hobbit.

On our last get together before the holidays we were 18 knitters and stitchers gather round for an evening of laughs and great progress on our projects.

Cindy S. was working on a table scarf done in wool with each individual pieces sewn with a blanket stitch.

Cynthiaaaaaaa as we call her brought all her lathe turned felters,seam rippers,pens and quilters aids for us to do a bit of local shopping.

I managed to finish 3 pair of fingerless gloves to start 2012 with a bang..........said the hobbit.

It's still Christmas

If I could keep the spirit of the holidays alive year round , that would be so special.The girls and I think about making Christmas meaningful throughout the year. Someone is always saying "You know what we should do this year?" Then they proceed to tell me some brilliant idea that will make the day oh so special.

Of course now we have Aaron who makes it oh so easy to remember what Christmas is all about.This year we thought his schedule was too full to spend time with us,but, low and behold a window opened and Aaron was here Christmas Eve.

He is such a little man. I think of him as my people whisperer. When he's around everyone has a smile to share. He's not quite 3, yet every time I see him, he manages to teach me something.

His parents,Thom and Michelle have chosen to teach him sign language. Aaron has chosen to teach everyone he meets,and,he does it so well. Wish we could spread his love around however right now we plan to keep him to ourselves. He's got lots of work to do right here !!

Seems his 2 aunties are suffering from a serious holiday meltdown and could use Aaron's special touch or maybe they just don't like the tams........No that can't be right...................said the hobbit.

Are you knitting your little heart out yet?I've been pretty busy here.Trying to keep up with the holidays is a full time job.

This is not the time to start new projects,however, this sweater has been calling me for awhile now and once the next 4 weeks are behind us I might put it on my "just for me"list. For now decorating for Christmas is my priority. Christmas parties seem to be in full steam ahead mood. I have several days with 2 parties that I really should be going to. Every day is filled with the magic of the season.

Another reason to be excited is the Grand Opening of a friends new shop.That's right with all that's going on she has opened a handmade gift store. Her personal specialty is little felted people and holiday decor.

This was one of her Halloween pumpkins. Absolutely darling!!!Check her out I'm sure she has something for everyone.

And.............she asked ME to bring some of my knitting to the shop. How awesome is that!!!So,my little Christmas ornament sweaters and.......

my fingerless gloves are now in a shop. Isn't that just the greatest?? Beaming like a new mother over here...............said the hobbit.

I know ...........It's been a bit crazy here in New England. The past month gave us the strangest weather. We had hurricanes and snow storms that have kept us hopping. First you struggle with flooding than just when you think things have settled and you expect to enjoy the fall foliage along comes a snow storm that cuts power and disrupts life all over again.

This is my friends back yard. That is an ash tree growing at that crazy angle for the past 200 years. It measured 92 feet high. Pretty impressive.

During the snow storm a loud crack was heard ...........and down came the tree.

It filled the yard with its massive size. That's the barn where it took a large chunk out of the roof. The barn and home were built in the 1700. It is what we call a post and beam. Even with that kind of damage it still stands strong.

I'm amazed at the unbelievable construction that was done in that time period. Well all that is cleaned away now but, something about that barn and the tree falling on it reminded me of just how strong our family is becoming.I rarely speak of things that are happening out in the big world but like many othercommunities this has been a growing year for all of us. Time to prioritize what is important and keep our focus where it belongs. This week is Thanksgiving and those that can will gather round our small table and give thanks that we are healthy and able to take care of each other. I hope your Thanksgiving is warm and cozy and overflowing with good food and lots of love.......................said the hobbit

The bride cried tears of joy throughout the ceremony. She so wanted everything to be perfect. The day before was rainy dark and gloomy ,but, the BIG DAY?

Of course.........Sun was shining,temp was perfect,all went well.

Aunties Sarah and Renee raised their glasses to a good life.

Uncle Thom and Aunt Michelle looked with approval.

Dad, Mike, couldn't be happier with the evening.

The cake was a wide selection of many cupcakes. YUMMY

Jiggy and I danced the last dance and a great time was had by all. Congratulations Cayla and welcome to the family Scott.

I am truly blessed with the most amazing group of people. This summer I went raspberry picking at my friend Chris' farm. We had a deal going where I made whoopie pies for her customers and we would settle at the end of the season. Imagine my surprise when she asked me to help her out by taking home extra CLAMS that someone had traded for berries.

I brought them home and put them in the sink to rinse out. My husband came home that day all excited to have found his first farmstand tomatoes. "That's great dear, but, wait till you see what I got at the berry farm" I steamed up a batch with white wine and garlic. A great piece of french bread made it a great meal.That left me with still plenty of clams to use up. Not knowing how to preserve them I got on the computer and did a bit of research.It seems stuffed clams can be prepared and frozen all ready to heat and eat at a later date.

Here is the basic recipe that I used. I pretty much follow it except that I make my own breadcrumbs with herbs and sundried tomatoes that I have in the fridge for just such a recipe.

Look at these babies. A side of pasta salad rounded out the meal. Of course I meant to ask everyone out there what they do with an excess of clams,but, summer took over my life and I'm just getting around to it.

Even after freezing they came out looking like this and tasting even better. So have you ever had too many clams to eat? What did you do with them..............said the hobbit

knit-along "the barn raising quilt"

Well we finally did it! After knitting pretty much for ourselves,our stitch and bitch group decided it was time to give back. So back it February of this year we decided to do something special for someone else.

I found a knitted quilt made from leftover sock yarn that I thought would be perfect.Each person would knit a square that I would then sew into a blanket.

The squares had a natural curl to them and that's how you join them. A simple running stitch just under the lip connect each one.

Then, crochet around the edge and it's done.

I tried to photograph it from different angles to give you a good idea of how it looks.

I hemmed and hawed about which square should go next to which and finally put them all in a bag and sewed them together as they came out.

Here is the finished quilt. It was four squares by five squares and will be just right for a carriage blanket. I'm very proud of my people, their hearts are always in the right place.

With 12 squares left over it looks like we might be doing this one more time. The carriage blanket will be donated to St Charles running nuns,click here for their story.It's a story worth repeating......................said the hobbit.

MORE FROM THE FIBER FESTIVAL

I couldn't resist showing a few more pictures of the RIVERSLEA FIBER FEST An older gentleman was mixing a rainbow of colors for the artisans to use as they saw fit. Just look at those hands. They have worked all their life doing for friends and neighbors.

I was mesmerized by the flow of his work and finally dared to ask what he was doing. "Whatever she tells me to do seems to work best" Of course everyone laughed,but, he never did volunteer any further information. He was working in the barn out of the hot sun and when I stepped outside.............

children were gathered around a young lady hoping for a turn at felting. She was using those rainbow strips of color to teach them how to felt using cookie cutters to make a design that they would be able to take home. Or they could felt with their feet....

This young lady put felting wool in a kiddie pool with bubble wrap and let those little bare feet do the work.

When all was done they had a piece big enough to be a rug. All involved couldn't wait to show mom and dad,or anyone that walked by, how creative they had been with their own two feet. How nice to find a way to get the little ones

Do you know someone that has made preserving the past their purpose in life? I am fortunate to know LIZ AND JEFF and their wonderful farm. They made the choice to live on this farm,raise sheep and lamb and educate people to a way of life that is still possible. For the second year they have opened their doors to the public to show how it's possible to live with the land and share with each other so many great talents.

Many of these crafts were available to purchase but, every artisan was also there to give you hands on instructions if you wanted to try yourself. Of course most have been at it for quite a while so their finished product was most tempting to purchase. The baskets were of the highest quality and would make a great gift by themselves or filled with fresh bread and homemade jam.

These adorable felted animals are made by Liz's niece and she proudly displays them with all her local yarns. Isn't that how families should support each other?

I fell in love with these and I wish my camera could have done them justice. They are 16x16 napkins. She uses the finest of threads to weave patterns that she remembers seeing. I have her card and will be placing an order for a few real soon.

Also on my must have list are these 100% wool blankets. The wool comes from her sheep and they are woven in Nova Scotia. They are over sized and even a twin would fit a double bed with overhang. At $75 for the twin size how could you possible go wrong. It was a wonderful day and I was introduced to so many new arts. I'd love to do them all but, I have decided to support my local artist instead of copying them. So this year for Christmas I will be making some of my gifts but some I'll just say I made it..................Naw, just kidding............said the hobbit

What are we eating now?

I've been trying to get back to my blog,but, every time I sit down in front of the computer something demanding me urgent attention happens and it seems like forever before I can get back to it. Worst yet, it takes me a day to figure out where I left off. Talk about senior moments.So I'm re tweaking my schedule and setting aside several hours in a block to hopefully accomplish what I haven't been able to do on a daily basis. Now for the yummy stuff. As you might remember I have a group of people that I make soups and salads for once a week. I also offer muffins. Variety is something I want them to have so when my friend SHAHEEN is a vegetarian who also believes in variety. Just check out her blog and you'll find something tasty for everyone. So, when I saw Courgette and Apricot muffins I couldn't wait to try them.Don't you just love the european word for zucchini? So, I tried these out on my "soup people" and they were a big hit.

First thing was to grate the zucchini (courgette) and let it drain.( I used a small one about 6 inches long and 1 1/2 inches in diameter) Slivered my apricots and sat them on my zucchini because it seemed like a good place to put them. I used 5 thinly slivered dried apricots,but, I think you can go up or down with this number.

I should have kept some to place on top of the muffins but, I wasn't thinking that far ahead. I love apricots and they probably would have disappeared before I got to the presentation end of it. I know Martha would be very disappointed in me.

Then I put my dry ingredients in my sifter, I'm going to give you the measurements that I used since Shaheen is in Scotland and everything is on the metric system.I have a scale that converts so for those of you who don't here is a close estimate of the measurements.

1 cup of white flour

1 cup of whole wheat flour ( she used barley but I didn't have it)

1 1/2 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

2-3 tablespoons cocoa powder

This was all sifted together.

In my bowl I whisked together:

3/4 cups of milk

2 large eggs

Added my flour mix and stirred in the zucchini and apricots till well blended. I filled my papered muffin tins 3/4 full and popped them in the oven at 375 degrees for 25 min or till the toothpick comes our clean. Actually I use a piece of uncooked spaghetti instead of a toothpick.Whatever you do is fine.

They were GREAT! I am pleased to report that the compliments were plentiful. Everyone thought this was a great way to use zucchini. I grated a few cups of zucchini and placed it in freezer bags so we can do this again and again. Hope you give this a try and let me know what you think. I'm sure Shaheen would like to know also..................said the hobbit

Hoo - rah! Time to cheer for me. With summer being at the peak of crazy busy,I was pretty happy that I actually completed a project.

This little shawl that I refer to as an epaulet because it just sits on your shoulder and keeps that annoying breeze from the air conditioner at bay.

When this photo was taken I had just started the shawl.We were still in sweater mode. Sarah was a brunette then, THIS is what she looks like now.That girl is changing with the seasons.Cindy was sipping on water and probably thinking this picture better not make it to the blog. Sorry Cindy I couldn't help myself,just a little laughter and light as you always say.

So here is the finished product.

What fun! This weekend was spent in Portsmouth N.H. Prescott Park.Our youngest SARAH was performing Shakespeare in the park.

This was a first at Prescott since they have always done a children's play for summer fun.

They chose Midsummer Nights Dream. This is one of Shakespeare's lighter plays and, a fantastic job was done by all involved. Of course, there was a sufficient amount of death and mayhem to keep everyone's interest.Then intermission gave us an opportunity to walk around the park

and view some awesome sites. This bridge was dedicated in 1923 and up until a few weeks ago saw traffic crossing from Portsmouth into Kittery Maine. Of course in the summer the center of this bridge went up every 30 minutes like clockwork,so, you had to really time your trip.Repairs are set to begin in the near future.

Spanning to the right of the bridge in the far distance you see a building that was used as a prison during World War II. When it had served its purpose it was filled with cement top to bottom so that it would never be used again. And so came an end to intermission and back to the play.

Deep conversations of undying love and commitment and of course in the end.

They lived happily ever after and a good time was had by all. Tadah....................said the hobbit

Barn raising quilt

It's been awhile since I've spoken of the BARN RAISING QUILT We are still moving on the project and are starting to see it really come together.Look at all these great squares!!!

I've been playing with the colors trying to get a good mix. However it hardly makes a difference how I place them. I love all the combinations.

After much thought,our group decided to make 2 carriage blankets for the RUNNING NUNS

We're moving right along on the second one. After all they need an extra blankie for those really nippy runs in the fall.I'm just starting to sew the seams today,hopefully, I can show you the finished product soon................said the hobbit

What happened to the grapefruit peel

So I left you with the grapefruit peel. I couldn't let it go to waste.

So I cut it into thin slivers and boiled it to get rid of some of the bitterness.

They suggest doing this about 3 times but, I did it once. I had peeled the grapefruit with a potato peeler and had little to no pith (the white stuff) so I wasn't too concerned about bitterness. I used THIS recipe but cut it in half.

Then in for a boiling of sugar water and..............

a roll in the confectioners sugar. I can't tell you how great this was I mean really, we almost ate the whole batch. Fortunately I was able to tuck some in the fridge to use in some desserts I was making.

First I made Whoopee pies and crumbled some into the filling.Chocolate and candied citrus,pretty tasty treat,and in the Whoopee pies? Talk about kicking it up a notch.

Then time was starting to be a problem,so, I pulled out the ever reliable puff pastry and using THIS recipe. I know! Summer madness is officially here. You know, that time of year when you are able to get fresh fruits and vegetables that are local and right off the vine. Why would you call this madness? Well, My head is spinning with new recipes and I don't want to waste any of that precious food that we have all worked so hard to harvest.

Last year I made raspberry vinegar I thought it might be fun,but, was amazed a how tasty and useful this was. A triple batch is in the making because by Christmas we had used ever last drop. Not going to happen this year. Of course starting with the best berries is essential to great results,but , if you're using fresh how can you go wrong? I'm fortunate enough to have a friend who owns just such a farm. Isn't that a great coincidence? So when she called and said the berries were ready I really got excited. I searched my cabinets and fridge to see what I could fix when I got back from berry picking.

In the drawer of the fridge I found 2 grapefruits. I carefully peeled them and then cleaned out the fruit "a la Martha"

There was nothing edible left when it was over.

A little bit of raw honey and then I let it sit in the fridge overnight. In the morning Jiggy proclaimed it heavenly. That man is great for my cooking ego. Of course that was just the beginning. You remember I have that great peel from the grapefruit. What do you think became of that?..........................said the hobbit

Summertime is just filled with things to see and do in New England. We try to squeeze everything into 10 short weeks of summer. This year is no exception,so much to see and do and so little time. Of course I can't start summer without a visit to the sheep and wool festival. Ours was in late May. I know this is July,but, I'm having a little trouble keeping up

Here are some of the sights I saw. This is a bunny!! Can you believe it? He just sits on his owners lap while she spins his hair. My husband thought this was a great idea. He actually said he wanted to have bunnies like this and learn how to spin. What could be better this winter than having a fuzzy bunny sitting in your lap to help keep you warm. As much as I'd love to take him up on his offer to be a spinner, it's not going to happen. I have visions of furry bunnies running around the house waiting to have their fur spun and my husband saying"I did it last week....isn't it your turn?"

Then we saw the llamas. They were dressed as tv character for a parade. I think this was suppose to be Lucille Ball. Not sure,but, Jiggy fell in love with them too.

How about this guy. Now that's some kind of sheep. I do believe he was in for a cut and trim.

Once we decided that one of the animals was not going to come home with us, I bought a skein of lace yarn and am working on a lightweight shawl that would be just enough for those chilly restaurants or maybe that wedding coming up in September. Did you know that a skein of lace yarn has 1000 yards? At least this one did. I wound it all by hand and thought it would never end.................said the hobbit

Somehow I've drifted away from eating from the pantry. I think it's because my husband Jiggy has discovered Trader Joe's. When the weather doesn't allow him to golf, he becomes obsessed with finding new ingredients for me to try. Of course the sun has been shining here for about 2 weeks straight and I haven't seen as much of him in the kitchen:-) This has given me an opportunity to take stock of what I have and clean a few shelves in anticipation of the canning that is to come. In the freezer I have local ground beef that comes in handy when I need to stretch the menu to feed 6 instead of 2. One of my new loves is cooking in muffin tins and that's how I discovered MUFFIN TIN TACOS

Bonus #1 They gave a recipe to make my own taco seasoning!!With a pantry shelf full of herbs and spices ,why would I ever buy taco seasoning again. So, check your pantry and see if you have these ingredients:

1 Tablespoon flour

2 teaspoons chili powder

1 teaspoon paprika

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/4 teaspoon oregano

1/4 teaspoon cayenne

pinch of salt

Of course I made a container full,who wants to measure out 1/4 teaspoon of any spice.

I browned my beef,removed it from the skillet. Very low fat content to my local beef so I didn't have to drain . Sauteed !/2 an onion and 1 diced jalapeno in the drippings. Then, I returned the beef sprinkled with about 1 Tablespoon of the seasoning mix,+ 3/4 cup water and stirred till thickened. I then added 2 tablespoons of salsa to the mixture, not in the recipe, but, I just couldn't help myself.

I heated my corn tortillas.......They used regular flour tortillas and cut out circles.I thought I would take a short-cut and use the smaller corn ,however they may be right. The corn tortilla was hard to maneuver into the tins. It did go a little better after heating them for a few minutes in the oven. Cheese on the bottom, 2 tablespoon meat mixture in the cup, and a little extra cheese on top Then bake 350 degrees 20 minutes.

When finished I topped them with chopped greens a little sour cream,diced tomato and a little more salsa.Aren't they cute?? They certainly can be made ahead frozen and cooked as needed. I think I'll be doing this a lot this summer.

One of our local farms, Brookford, is making a real effort to educate and supply the locals with products that your grandmother had on hand. I'm trying very hard to maintain a local circle that will keep my needs available within a 100 mile radius. I often make buttermilk biscuits and Mary at the farm informed me that kefir was an acceptable replacement for the buttermilk.

Although I had no doubt she knew what she was talking about it took me several weeks to let go of the notion that buttermilk biscuits absolutely had to have buttermilk in them. I'm stubborn that way.

But, it's strawberry season and of course I needed biscuits so I broke down and tried the kefir

I wasn't disappointed.........look at these babies. Aren't they just adorable? Of course we tried them with the berries and french vanilla ice cream,but, I forgot to take a picture........take my word for it so...................good. I really want to try Martha's STRAWBERRY BREAD I had it on the list for last year and got so busy with jams that I totally forgot. Then came blueberry season and raspberry then cherry and peach. I guess the bread took a back seat. This year it's at the top of the list. What are you doing with berries? How about kefir? Cindi S. found it so amusing that she decided to make a mini version to put on a friends bulletin board. So. she took out her graft paper and made a pattern from the picture.

Popcorn is pretty much a staple in our household. Whether we are watching a movie or cheering on our favorite team, a bowl of popcorn is always a welcomed treat. We always have your basic melted butter and salt version,and, I always think "next time I want to try something different". Of course, I don't. I melt the butter and start the popcorn and think........... maybe next time.

So I checked out MARTHA STEWART "she who knows all" and found a recipe for caramel almond popcorn click here You see when I was little my father and mother would make these amazing popcorn balls. I would watch them squeeze and form these perfect round popcorn delights and so I longed to make an equally tasty treat.

So I brought all the ingredients to the said proper temperature.

Poured this over my mix of popcorn and slivered almonds and got ready to mix and form. It didn't take more than 1/2 a second to realize this could be a very dangerous thing to attempt.

You guessed it. I got a nasty blister from the sugar mix.....................dah!!!! What was I thinking? The popcorn was great but, this particular recipe was just too thick for what I had in mind. My quest will continue. What do you do with popcorn?...............said the hobbit

How adorable is this? Not everyone in our group is addicted to knitting socks.

These cute boxes were made by Sue T. for Easter treats. She YaYa are really into this kind of needlework.

and I was the lucky recipient of these all occasion cards made just for me by YaYa. It's always nice to be remembered even when I insist that I don't want any one to make a fuss. I guess that's what friends are for.

This little piece of artwork was done by Aaron. He even made the buttons!!! It's a scarf that appears to have a pocket for storage,and........................

when you want to put it away for the winter it stores into the pocket. Such a creative guy! I guess we'll be keeping him around a little longer to see what he can come up with.

Now I have to tell you about Cynthia. She has created a new felting tool that you can see here.Wanting to have something that her customers could felt on and get the feel of the tool, she made this adorable little scene with sheep and gnome. Not bad for her first felting attempt. However she didn't leave much room for practice felting by others. SALADS..........that's the star of the table right now. As some of you may know I cook for a few people in my spare time. Of course it seems silly to not make a little extra so that my family gets to share in this yummy goodness. In the winter months I usual make 3 soups and the people on my list will order a quart if they want. The month of May is when this comes to an end ,however, this year I was asked if I could continue and maybe even offer a few salads. This week was the first for pasta salad and I chose to make PEANUTTY PASTA.

I'm sure a lot of you have made this out there. If not, this is a great way to use small amounts of veggies that shouldn't be allowed to go to waste. I cooked up my pasta, rinsed and let it cool. In a large skillet I sauteed in 2 tablespoons ofevoo, 2 minced cloves of garlic and 1 tablespoon of grated ginger, just till I could smell their aroma. Stop here and breathe in. To the pan add 1 cup broth veggie or chicken,1/2cup good peanut butter 1/4 cup soy sauce and 1/4 cup white wine. Allow to simmer 5-7 minutes. Set aside to cool. In the same pan with a little extra oil I sauteed slivered sweet red pepper, mushrooms,and last pea pods.I grated a few carrots and cut a 3 scallions. These were not cooked. Mix the veggies with the pasta then pour as much of the sauce as you wish. This is fine served hot but, we love it cold.

Whatever you have for veggies is fine. Broccoli,sprouts,corn.it's all good. Put this in your fridge,for a quick snack,but, be ready to find an empty bowl.......................said the hobbit

We are still going strong with our knitting group. Lot's of laughs and lots of knitting.

Occasionally we are joined by Aaron. We met him when he worked the fields at the Barn He always makes sure to keep in touch and shows up with a new creation and story to keep us up to date with what's happening in his world. Here he is hamming it up with his sweatband decorated with knitting needles. Or was he deciding which

of the many socks the girls have made lately. The" sock queen" has been on the road lately caring for aging family members and whipped up enough socks to keep her whole families feet toasty warm. No she wasn't driving and knitting. Hubby was behind the wheel and she used her time to knit.

Cindy S. made this hat by knitting a plain cap and joining a decorative band. She makes it look sooo easy.

Cindy H. finished her first pair of socks. Original pattern was for a plain leg but her creative side got the best of her and she did the math to add cables. These were to be a gift but, she is rethinking that. I vote for her to keep them, after all, It's her first pair. She should be able to look at them with a great sense of accomplishment every time she puts them on. Don't you think? Don't you just love bread? Every Friday I'm in the kitchen baking bread and sometimes I add a batch of buttermilk biscuits. Now that spring/summer has finally arrived I'm itching to try some new recipes. Of course local farms are always a great place to get ideas to use local produce. With the sun shining and a mission on my mind I headed out for Brookford Farms in Rollinsford N.H. in search of kefir and Camembert cheese. They had sent me a new recipe for rolls that was oh so interesting. I just could not resist giving them a try. I've never used kefir for baking but, I hear it can be used anytime buttermilk is requested. These little rolls are stuffed with mash potatoes and chive and the Camembert. The cheese was so wonderful that it's a miracle it made it in the rolls.

I don't usually make my dough using all whole wheat flour but, I was following their recipe for the first time and certainly wanted to have it their way before I would even think of changing anything. Straight whole wheat requires a longer rising time. I'll have to work that in. Once the little rolls were stuffed with the mash potatoes and the oh so delicious camembert(drool here) They had to rise for another 1/2 hour. Don't they look like little baked potatoes? I'm waiting to hear from Mary before I post her recipe. Let you know when she says yes.

Here they are in all their glory. I really think these are worth repeating. If you are a hiker or camper these are just the right thing to bring along when you need a pick me up. No, we don't do either of those things but, we love eating outside in the summer and having these with a little wine and maybe some pate, if it's been a good week, will be my go to evening break for this summer...........Just heard from Mary at the farm, she thinks it would be fine for me to give out the recipe She's the best........................said the hobbit

This recipe makes about a dozen and a half small breads, or fewer if you want 6" rounds.

the dough:

3 1/2 cups whole wheat bread flour

1/2 cup kefir

3/4 cup warm water

1 teaspoon dry yeast

a dribble of honey

1/2 teaspoon salt

a beaten egg mixed with a little water

sesame seeds or oats as optional topping

the filling:

1/2 round of Camembert cheese, sliced

2 cups mashed potatoes

1/2 cup chives or scallions

salt

Mix the warm water, kefir, honey and yeast. Stir together the salt and flour, and then pour the yeast mixture into the flour mixture. It is OK to add more water if you need to, but you want a fairly stiff dough in the end. Knead the dough for 10 minutes by hand, less in an electric mixer. Let the dough rise in a warm spot for two hours or so, until doubled. Meanwhile, cook and mash the potatoes, and stir in the scallions and salt. When the dough has risen, punch it down and cut it into 12 - 18 pieces. Form each one into a ball, and then roll it out to a thickness of about 1/2". Place a slice of Camembert in the center of each round, and then drop a spoonful of potatoes on top. Paint the outside of each dough circle with water to make them sticky, then draw the edges closed like a drawstring purse. Turn each dough ball over so the sealed side is down, and flatten them on an oiled baking sheet. Paint the flatbreads with an egg beaten with a little water and allow them to rise for about half an hour. Bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees for about 20 minutes, until brow

Summer in Bloom

Summer came yesterday. I was absolutely smitten and couldn't wait to get out there. Hubby couldn't wait to get on the road and drive, drive and have a nice lunch.

So off we went to do a little shopping and eating. I spotted a local woodworker who was selling wood cubes. I had visions of my porch having these dressed up as tables/eating areas and I quickly ordered 2. I don't have them yet but, I'll keep you posted as to the actual turnout. Then it was off to the Maine Coast and one of Jiggy's favorite restaurants.

THE MAINE DINER ......I quite enjoy this restaurant but, as with all diners the portions are more than I can eat. Jiggs had his favorite SHE CRAB SOUP while I sipped on an ice tea.Then we shared an appetizer of fried seafood and a side order of potato salad. When the appetizer came I thought she was bringing us someone's seafood platter. Really it was that big.We took our time eating and had just enough room for a huge (of course) strawberry shortcake. Now I'm really stuffed and it's time to move on to a farmers market. Hubby is really trying but market to him is

TRADER JOE"S That's ok I know by now what he really needs is a cart to help him walk and I don't make a fuss when we drive right by 2 fresh and local markets. No carts at the eat local and he still has a hard time with uneven ground. The new knee still needs to be babied. Don't tell him I know. We bought all the treats that he loves and can not buy "locally" Dried fruit for his granola pistachios for watching baseball and Canadian cheddar and crackers to root for his beloved Bruin hockey

Meanwhile I'm dreaming of the porch and how I would like it to look. Last year I went to a Quilt Shop in Cornish Maine and this was her porch.

Not perfect but, so welcoming. I thought it was time to dress up our porch and as taking inspiration from hers.

A closer look show a grouping of totally unnecessary items but in just the right colors to make for good eye appeal and fun conversation. My favorite thing was her Nasturtiums.

I immediately went home last year and tried to duplicate these. Starter plants were all gone so I planted seeds in a pot much smaller then hers. Of course I had blooms for about 2 weeks before a frost came. Her pot was a huge cobalt blue about 24 in across at the top. I checked these out at the garden shop and it's a little pricey for me. Besides you can't even see the pot or the crumbled pieces that the UPS man had just made when he hit the pot while backing up. So today is not sunny and gorgeous. A perfect day to work outside,however, the lawn has gotten out of hand and not only does it need to be cut,it also needs to be raked. Really it's that high! Luckily I've learnt to take one day at a time so maybe tomorrow I'll be in the garden.....................said the hobbit

Wow! Things have been crazy busy around here and I've been struggling to meet all the demands on my time from people that I can't and should not say no to unless I'm on my deathbed. To make matters worst I have tried to post 2 times in the past month only to discover when I pushed the publish button that blogger was in reader mode only till further notice. I hadn't even realized there was a problem. But enough with the excuses, everyone out there is up to their eyeballs in things to do so I just need to get better organized if I want to keep up with this blog.

I need to touch base on my knit-along. Have you forgotten. Just go here for a reminder and leave a comment if you want to join in the fun. The square is made up of 4 rows that you repeat till you have a 7x7 square. It can be done on 4 needles changing to a circular if you feel it's too many stitches. I used double pointed needles and marked my first stitch with a little safety pin See it there on the left hand side?

Hard to believe this will be a square when you finish. Looks like a flower doesn't it? This one is done with leftovers as are most of the squares.

I cast off the stitches on one needle here so you can see the corner and how it appears seemingly out of nowhere.

New squares keep coming in and I've given much thought to where it should be sent. I decided to make the afghan into as many stroller blankets as possible and donate them to my town's Running Nuns. That's right I said Running Nuns We have an orphanage in this town that takes in children while there families try to rebuild their lives. They are a young active and motivated group of nuns that you can see on a daily basis running through our city streets always pushing a carriage and accompanied by a dozen or so runners that the nuns have in"training" for things to come. Although this could be a most trying and difficult time,when you see them out there running and smiling and oh so focused on the task at hand, you just want to do something.It is for that reason that I've decided to make the mini-quilt to cover the little one in the strollers so they can sit back and enjoy the ride even when the weather is a bit more brisk. Finally I can put the snow behind be and start to get down to business with the garden. Things are not as bad as this but, it is currently raining and spitting a bit of ice as we speak.

Soon my roses will be back but, for now I'm still in the planning stage. Unlike Mikey(son#2)who just called to tell me that the Farmers Market in his new home town of Raleigh N.C. is open 364 days a year. Shame on him for telling me such news. I think I'll have to plan a trip down there to see for myself after all seeing is believing. Maybe I should start packing now.

This is the state of my Geraniums. Not much to look at. Yet I'm encouraged that they came back at all.

I don't do very well with houseplants,too busy being outside when weather permits. Last year I made an effort to correct this problem and grew this helicopter fern along with an artillery fern. Doesn't look like much because Bitty (the cat) loved eating this plant. I'd hide it and she would find it. As soon as I can I will put it on the porch and maybe it will have a chance. With winter finally making an exit and the garden still just a dream away,we are left with butternut squash to remind us of good from the garden flavors.

This became a favorite several years ago when a do-ahead recipe was needed for Thanksgiving. Now I know that holiday is long past but, in my opinion there is no better time to be thankful than the end of winter. My family is healthy with a roof over their head and all are employed in what is a difficult time for many. We are grateful.

First cut up a butternut squash in chunks big enough to handle. Do not peel but clean out seeds.Put about an inch of water in a pot add squash and bring to a boil.Lower heat and allow to cook till fork tender. Could take about 45 mins. Cool in strainer till you can handle it.

In a smaller bowl mix :

1 cup mayo

1egg

1/2 finely diced onion

tablespoon of sugar

salt and pepper to taste

Give this a good mix till thoroughly blended. I just use a fork.

When you can handle the butternut,remove the flesh from the peel. This is a lot easier than peeling the squash. Now I place it in a large bowl and mash it with a potato masher or whatever you have handy. Stir in sauce and mix well.

Sprinkle with butter and parmesan cheese and bake in oven till golden. 375 degrees 20-30 minutes. Depending on whether or not you preheat. I could eat the whole thing. It really is that good...........................said the hobbit

So much going on lately that I haven't had time to do justice to my blog. But, family comes first. I have 4 children and 3 of them are in the process of major moves. It's amazing how much work is involved in a move. We should be pros by the third one. So, enough excuses .......her's what's going on in my craft world.

With the encouragement of friends I agreed to set up a small booth at the Tuttlefest It wasn't nearly as traumatic as I thought it would be. I need to work on my display set-up. As you can see it's a little helter skelter.

Of course if you're lucky enough to have talented friends who are willing to put their craft on your table like my friend Amy. Her little creatures are magical and would put a smile on anyones face.

Ane then we have Cynthia a member of my knitting group whose talents in wood turning have to be seen in the flesh to truly be appreciated.Here are her pin cushions.

So much going on lately. Thank goodness we have the stability of our knitting group. I know that's not a girl but,AAron has been with us since we started. He worked the fields at the farm and just started hanging with us determined to learn to knit.

That is the same scarf he started years ago ,but, as you can see the ball of yarn is getting smaller so he should be ready for his second project soon. He always manages to bring us a new knitter. This is Kerri and we hope to see more of her.

Cindi has found a project that she is having a great time with. She made these little hearts for us to wear as pins for February. (I told you I was behind.) I thought they were adorable and I've already found a project to work them into. Yes I wrote it down so I wouldn't forget.

I've been knitting my fingerless gloves trying to build up a stock as I'm going to have a craft booth at the Tuttle farm this weekend. I promise to take pictures.................said the hobbit

I know I'm not alone when I say it's time for spring to make an appearance. Just when I thought we were rounding the bend snow came into the picture and we are back to square one.

This would be the garden. Hard to look our there and have visions of little sprouting greens filling my tiny space. So shut door and get back in the kitchen. That's my answer.When I was little my mother would make a super moist chocolate cake that used mayonnaise in the batter. I was happy to see the recipe on the container of Hellmann's mayo this year and thought what a perfect time to bring back a warm and cozy feeling.

Of course tweeking the outcome is normal for me so,I decided against the sheet cake design that they suggested and made cupcakes and one layered heart cake for my honey.

It was great fun and certainly took my mind off the weather that is lurking out there. One bite told me this was not my mothers cake but, we enjoyed it anyway. Mom never made anything from a box, which is why I should have known immediately that this wasn't going to duplicate her usual loving efforts. I'm sure you could do this with any mayo so, for those of you who never heard of mayo cake here is the recipe.

1 box of chocolate cake mix

1 cup of mayo

1 cup of water

3 eggs

1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)

Place all in a bowl beat on low 30 seconds Beat on medium for 1 full minute. Pour into prepared pans and bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees or till toothpick comes out clean. Decorate as you wish. Certainly easy and not really bad just not what mom use to make.................said the hobbit

It's all about the soup

Modern medicine, amazing isn't it. Can you just see your grandfathers face if you told him to get a new knee? My pepere already thought we were all from another world,this would surely put him over the edge.

Here he is with his therapist Jamie and Willem checking on his flexibility. The goal is 130 degrees. Not a problem, he has surpassed that and is heading for new territory. And to what do we own this miracle to?? Great surgeons? Above average hospital care?Caring therapist? Well they did their part,but, I think it was all about my soup.

You doubt me??? Then you just have to try this soup and see if it doesn't make you feel on top of the world.......Really! Every one involved in Jiggy's care has told me the more weight he loses the better his recovery will be. In some cases the body takes up to 24 months to heal completely,so,we could see improvement for the next 2 years. Soup has played an important role in our everyday activities through most winters ,but especially this year. Everyone has had changes in there lives lately and I truly believe soup is the crutch we need to lean on.

This soups takes no fancy steps and can be made in a jiffy.

2 TABLESPOONS BUTTER (no salt)

1 LARGE ONION

1 POUND OF CARROTS

1 PEELED LARGE SWEET POTATO

1 PEELED LARGE BAKING POTATO

1 HEAD OF CAULIFLOWER

2QTS OF WATER OR VEGGIE BROTH

SALT AND PEPPER TO TASTE

MINCED FRESH DILL

1 CUP OF SOUR CREAM

Put everything in a pot a (not the sour cream) and simmer till everything is tender. Puree 1/2 or all the veggies Return to the pot .Add the sour cream and stir to blend,heat to serving temp and season if necessary with salt and pepper. A dollop of sour cream and an additional sprinkle of dill when serving is up to you.

You'll have about a gallon of soup,so,pass it around. I sell my soups in the winter time but, this one is going to an elderly neighbor. She's my #1 taster. Hope to get back soon. Have so much to share but, my schedule is crazy right now. Miss you all.....................said the hobbit

Let's knit a Quilt

Well here it is February and I promised to keep you up dated on the progress we make on the BARN RAISING QUILT. What!!! You've forgotten!!! That's ok, just check out the past blog here.

Want to join in the fun? All you need is some leftover fingering yarn and about an hour of your time to be part of this quilt. The plan is to get as many squares as possible by Sept 1st , then we'll assemble what we have and give away a quilt, anywhere from carriage size to twin bed size. Of course I'd be tickled if we get the larger size done but, we'll see.

This is the most difficult part of making a square. It's started from the center and worked outward ,so, keeping every needle in it's place can be a little trying,but, once you've gone past this point it's all eezy peezy.

A little patience to start and then knowing how to knit a stitch and add a stitch and you could be part of this project. What do you think? come and join in the fun.

Being thankful

Recently I read a post by my good friend at Gingerbread Snowflakes, who reminded me of the importance of saying "thank you".Of course I sat there reading and agreeing at how more of this needs to be spread around,when it dawned on me that I wasn't saying it nearly enough. In fact I wasn't sure I had said it at all lately. So that's it people I'm making an effort to mind my manners.Let me start with Christine, a member of our Stitch and Bitch group who recently moved to Connecticut where she is trying to become a minimalist and blogging on the trials and tribulations of moving forward. She came to us very much into reuse and recycle and introduced us to the art of reusing wool from sweaters that have been sent to Goodwill or other used good stores. She made us aware of an area that we just hadn't thought of.

We miss her smiling face and thank her for being part of our world.

On her last day with us, she brought in many yarns and buttons that she just felt she would never use. I picked out a few buttons and after a gentle nudge from my fellow knitters I took ALL the buttons home.Did I say Thank you Christine???? I was probably so excited thinking how many different ways I could use them. My mind was in a whirl of activity. What can I do with the button. We shall see.

And now we have Jacki, a knitting newbie. She is such a quick learner that I have trouble believing she just picked up the needles. After just 1 little lesson she came back to us having made the decision that wooden needles were more comfortable than metal and, wool felt better on the hands than acrylic....Wow, that was fast. She is half way through the scarf that she is knitting and already thinking of her next project. Ladies, I think we had better come prepared with new patterns ,as this girl is ready to move forward.

Perhaps she would like to attempt these lovely socks done up by Cindy S. She used Patons Kroy sock yarn which you can find at Ben Franklins or JoAnns Fabric. Well,that's it for today and I must not forget to say THANK YOU to all who read this post..........said the hobbit

Have you ever been to a pie palooza? Well you're missing a good time. Ren,hubby the "G" man and Oskar had a tasting of pies for the month of January.

Tired of everyone being too busy to get together,they are making an effort to get friends and family motivated to get off that couch and have some fun.

A bit of wine ,some yummy cheeses with pepperoni and crackers,and could that be caviar? Well maybe not. Nonetheless a fine presentation if I do say so.

She even made napkins,found a great pie plate and server to give as a door prize. The girl has talent...........what can I say.

And who won that awesome prize??

It was Sarah, who told me not to post this photo. Ren ,of course, said "Do it Mom" It's her party and she makes the rules. After tasting skank pie,chicken pot pie ,vegetable pasta pie, I'm afraid there was little room for dessert. A bit of pecan pie was all I could manage. I sure would have liked to try the apple and the apple raspberry but, I miscalculated as to how much I could eat. February will be seafood month and I can't wait to see what everyone will bring. You see she plans on having an event every month. Well, we all know how short this month is and how time flies so I'd better check my recipes. Let's see, would she want appetizer?main course? salad? January goals!!

Out of time again!! What happened here? I made my list for January and it's now February 1st. Did I get everything done? No. But not to worry I'm happy with the way the month turned out just the same. I made these fingerless gloves and managed to have several request for the holidays.Once Christmas was over I was surprised to have several more people looking for them,so, I wanted to get at least 3 pairs done this month and I did.

The pair above is from last year and the 2 below are new for 2011. Where's the other pair? Sold and delivered.

Then there's the Christmas garland I wanted to make in January. I went through several sessions of "I could do this or maybe that" You know how that is.

I think I got a good idea of what I want to do now and have started the project. It's on the top of the list for February.............honest. I got Jiggy started on his diet,finished the little sweaters and made that Christmas card list. Still working on a new ornament,nothing ready to show anyone yet. Of course,don't forget about the barn raising quilt I'll be talking more about that later.

Well today is coming to an end and I don't have my list done for February.How about you.Did you make a list? How do you motivate yourself to get things done?I'm feeling like the rabbit in Alice in Wonderland. I'm late,I'm late........................said the hobbit

what are we eating

Like many people,we started the new year with weight lost as one of our plans for January.

Salads of course,should be included in everyones daily intake. Not as easy as it sounds.There is something about a cold salad in the winter that just isn't very tempting. However the commitment was made so that Jiggy could reach his desired goal of ***lbs. He still won't let me put it in writing......silly boy.What to do to make it more tasty?

At Christmas I made this raspberry vinegar as a gift and had a few spoonfuls leftover. Of course I couldn't throw it away.Then the light bulb went on and I thought "why not use it as a dressing for the salad?"His favorites are blue cheese, thousand island and anything else creamy and rich that would be a no-no.So,without saying a word I sprinkled about 2 teaspoons all over the salad and gave it to him. "Oh my God.What did you put on this salad?It taste like fresh raspberries!"Ah, a winner!! I could sprinkle this on without worrying about adding tons of calories to the salad.But, I was out of raspberries and the vinegar took 3 weeks to make!!! I did have blueberries however so I put a cup of berries in a quart ball jar added the 1 and1/2 cups white vinegar and 1/2 cup superfine sugar. Instructions are to shake at will for 3 weeks and it will be ready to strain and use. After a week I took a little taste and it was nasty.I continued to follow the simple directions and shook the jar whenever I walked past it and did not taste again till the 3 weeks were up.

Look at this gorgeous cruet of blueberry vinegar. And the taste is fabulous!! As with everything in life, patience is an important part of the process. Good things come to those who wait.Whoever said that was right.

I'm still making my bread every week. A slice of this with the salad and a cup of soup fits the bill for a perfect lunch. Hubby is at the 30lbs lost level so I think we are doing something right. I think we'll stay on this course for a bit longer. Now that I'm thinking of the garden,maybe a section on salad is in order. Do you have the garden bug yet? I bet you do.........said the hobbit

The story of the shrinking hubby

Well as you all heard Jiggy got a new knee for Christmas and now he has no excuse to shed those extra pounds that he blamed on his inability to exercise.

He is feeling much better and already hard at work doing his thing. We brought all his tools and gizmos downstairs to the main hallway so he could get his groove back. No slacking in this house.
In order to help him along I am putting his progress in black and white as they say so that he knows someone is watching.

We are taking a year to accomplish this feat. No crash dieting here. It's a whole new learning curve for him and baby steps will work best. That was his usual soup bowl on the left. More of a vegetable bowl but,that 's what he had evolved to. Soup dish on the right is what we are now using. Probably a saving of about 2 1/2 cup of soup. That and half a sandwich of chicken salad on my homemade bread is what lunch consist of.

These are my favorites.Aren't they cute. Tiny little casseroles that hold just the right amount of meat or vegetables for someone who is trying to cut down.I've been cooking ahead and just re-heating in them. I put them next to an 8 ounce cup so that you could see they size. Surgery was Dec. 15th and he has been under my watchful eye,but, as with most men he is losing quickly. We don't have an official weigh in yet but,the pants are falling off and he thinks it's time to shop. The real test will be when he is free to roam in his vehicle with his buddies. Lunch meetings with his clients to discuss upcoming cases is a common excuse. For now I have to say "the man" is doing a great job of doing the right thing.

Ok so I'm dragging my feet here. I wanted to do a garland out of my Christmas cards ,but, I couldn't commit to the specifics.

I realized I had about a bakers dozen of my little sweaters in various stages of completion so, I picked up these little ornaments and didn't stop till I could put them away ready to go in December.I know,I know not a big step but, I promise I'll get more creative next week. Something new at stitch and bitch

Ok ,so life is crazy in this corner of the world. What's new? Although I'm short on time, my little brain is still in gear so here we go with a new project. Do any of you have this book?

It's Larissa Brown's Knitalong. I've had it for a few years now,always planning to do one of her projects. It's just filled with ideas of things you can do as a group to make the process more fun and enjoyable. We've been getting together for 4 years now and have geared most of our knitting to making our Christmas presents. It's been great but I thought we should take it a step further. How about making something for someone we don't even know? Giving is such an important part of Christmas and wouldn't it be nice to do for someone we don't even know?

This is the project we decided on. It's called the Barn Raising Quilt and the idea is to get as many knitters from all over to make the squares and then assemble them randomly to create a quilt that can never be duplicated. I would love for everyone to make a square. Yes that means you too. The book is available from Amazon or I'm sure you could get it from the library. I would be so excited if we got enough squares to make at least one quilt.

The girls at S&B have already gotten on the band wagon and are hard at work to make this possible.

The material used is leftover fingering yarn that we used for socks. That's right! This whole project can be made using up those bits and pieces that are too small to use on another pair of socks yet too precious to throw away.

I'm hoping we can create the most colorful quilt yet. E-mail me if you have any questions. The project will be on going till about September. Remember more is better so ask your friends too. Who knows? Maybe we can get 2 quilts done.Be still my heart.............said the hobbit

What direction to take?

By now most of you have decided which direction to take for 2011. Not so easy here. This past month has been filled with new schedules,Dr.'s appointments and trying to keep things as normal as possible.I tried to keep the list small and doable so I don't get too upset if I slip between the cracks,so bear with me. What I usually needed a morning to do now takes the better part of a week.

My first goal was to update my Christmas card list,and, I got it done. I have never made an effort to send out cards, thinking it a waste of time and money but in the past few years it suddenly became clear that making the effort to let people you care about know that they are in your thoughts at this most important time of the year. Not wanting to leave anyone out I carried a box of envelopes with addresses' that I always meant to write down in a book so that I could finally get rid of that excess paper. So after 3 years of checking and double checking I finally sorted the whole mess and have a beautiful Christmas card list to work from next year. Who knows maybe I'll even try my hand at making cards this year. Goal #2 is to make a garland from the old cards.I've seen several of these and I'm hoping to get one done in the month of January.

Now for the gross stuff. This is the back of Jiggy's new knee. Talk about black and blue. He's coming along very well and has a whole new attitude about what he's doing and how he wants to get there. I'm a big part of his plan so, our big goal this year is to help him lose ***lb You see he has done less and less in the way of exercises in the past 12 years because he constantly put off having this surgery done.

Here is the front .Not so bad,right? So my little goals will have to take a back seat because this weight lose is top priority. He's got the right attitude and even though it's a lot of weight I think he can make it. We're going to take it one day at a time with Christmas 2011 being his deadline to lose about 2 lbs a week.His Doctor told him he's eating nothing wrong just too much so first thing on the list is to cut the portions in 1/2. I'll keep you posted as to his progress.

But fear not I have 2 crafty daughters who will make sure I get my share of cooking and crafting.Want to see what they're up to? This is my Christmas addict She thinks Christmas all year long and has lots of plans for us crafters this year. Maybe you'd like to join in the fun?Can't think about the holidays yet ? Tuesday night S&B

New year hasn't stopped the girls from getting together on Tuesday night.They seem very serious here don't they? Everyone said "don't take my picture while I'm eating " but, that's a big part of our get-together. We've decided to do some giving projects this year and the details are still being worked out. Perhaps you can join it. But,I can't tell you about it until I have all the details worked out.

How's that for a colorful throw.Not sure where she got the idea but it sure looks like a fun project.

We all oohed and ahhed when she whipped these 3 hats for her daughter and her 2 best friends. They are seniors this year and she wanted to give them something that was the same but, different. What I was unable to show on the inside were the girls names. C3 Such a clever lady.

Sox queen had to make an 8 hour drive to visit family this week and came back with 3 and 1/2 socks all good to go. It's a heavier sock,much needed for our New England weather,but, the shading of soft pink and grey with off white tells me her hubby won't be trying these on any time soon. Hope to be back real soon so we can talk about that special project. Off to get all my ducks in a row ......................said the hobbit
